5th – Social Studies
The Grade 5 social studies curriculum in Ontario focuses on the study of societies, cultures, and governments. Students deepen their understanding of political and social systems by exploring the evolution of governments, the rights and responsibilities of citizens, and the principles of democracy. They examine Indigenous cultures, the first peoples of Canada, and the historical and cultural influences of ancient societies, such as the Egyptian, Greek, and Roman civilizations. The curriculum also includes geographical concepts, such as maps, regions, and climates. The goal is to help students better understand contemporary social and political issues and develop skills in critical analysis and civic reflection.
