Elective Courses Ontario Secondary School Literacy Course, Grade 11 or 12, Open (CCL3O/CCL4O) This course allows students to develop the language skills necessary for the Ontario Secondary School Diploma and to demonstrate proficiency equivalent to passing the Provincial Literacy Test. Students read a variety of everyday texts that convey information or present an opinion, some of which include graphic elements, as well as narrative texts. They write a variety of texts, including summaries, opinion pieces, journalistic news stories, and informational texts. Students are expected to create and maintain a portfolio of their reading and writing achievements as they relate to their academic and personal projects. Eligibility Requirements: Students who have had two opportunities to write the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) and have failed at least once are eligible to take the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Course (OSSLC). The principal has the discretion to allow the student to register for the course before they have a second opportunity to write the OSSLT, if the principal determines it would be in the student's educational best interest. Mature students may register directly for the course without first attempting the OSSLT. In special circumstances, students who have met the literacy requirement of the diploma may take the OSLC, at the discretion of the principal.
